New Hele Organ

Disaster struck the Church of St Michael & All Angel's Alphington, Exeter, when fire swept through the building destroying much of the roof and many furnishings, including the old Hele Organ. Undaunted by the tragedy, the Reverend Mark Bate, Rector of Alphington, set in motion a programme of restoration that was to take three years to complete.

The construction of a new Organ presented the opportunity to reconsider its location - the previous position in the south aisle had proved unsatisfactory. It was decided to accommodate the Organ in a loft south of the chancel. Hele and Company Ltd were selected to build the entirely new instrument.

The case is of oak whilst the interior is constructed from mahogany. Peter Gundry F.R.I.B.A., F.R.S.A., Surveyor to the Dean and Chapter of Exeter Cathedral, designed the illustrated West front. All metal pipework was made in Hele's workshops together with some wood pipes. The pedal Bourdon pipes were made by Aug. Laukhuff of Germany.

Among the organ's many features are slider soundboards to the manuals, incorporating Schmidt seals, two Swell louvered fronts with a total of nineteen shutters, independent winding for all three departments, together with capture combination system.
